What is Forgiveness
Why must we Forgive
Father, in Jesus Name; We ask You for Your Wisdom and Understanding. as we carry on with Your Word to see the definition and benefits of forgiveness. You tell us should we lack wisdom and understanding, we may boldly enter Your Presence, make our requests known to You, then You shall give them to us.
Than You Lord, for always answering our prayer. We give You all Praise, Glory and Thanksgiving. You are Worthy of all. You open the eyes of our understanding, to see that which You have to show us. Open our ears, to hear that which You Spirit, is telling your Church, in this hour. Amen!
2.1 What is Forgiveness
As written in my, previous post; Forgiveness is showing mercy, pardoning those who; may have done us wrong. We need to forgive others, even as God. through Christ forgave us. It is not showing resentment toward that person or persons. It is allowing our Lord, to show mercy, even as on Calvary, He cried out; “Father forgive them, for they know not, what they do.”
Forgiveness works by Faith, through Love. God so Loved, that He forgave us our sin. When we call on His Name, we shall not be ashamed. The Lord hears us, the moment, we call upon Him. There is only One Mediator, between God and man. He is Jesus (see 1Tim 2:1-8)
“For God so loved; that He gave His only Begotten Son (Christ Jesus); so that whoever would believes on (in) Him, should not perish(come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life. For God did not send His Son into the world, to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the Name of the only begotten Son of God. _ _ _ this is the condemnation, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than Light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the Light and does not come to the Light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the Light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God” (Jn 3:15-21).
Forgiveness, Love, Repentance, Grace, Mercy and Salvation; always work together. Yet only when we repent, acknowledge our need for a Saviour. We are not able to forgive ourselves. We are only able to live and walk in forgiveness through the acceptance of Christ Jesus, as our Lord, Master and Saviour. Man wants to avenge a wrong, committed. Where Christ Jesus, on Calvary’s Cross, He forgave our sin.
2.2 Who Forgives
” 14 For if you forgive people their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you.15 But if you do not forgive others their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses.”(Mt 6:14-15 Amp)
“22 And having said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit!23 [Now having received the Holy Spirit, and being led and directed by Him] if you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of anyone, they are retained.” (See Jn 20:21-23 Amp).
14 In Whom we have our redemption through His blood, [which means] the forgiveness of our sins.
The Lord, our God because of His Great Love towards us, chose to forgive us our sin. He became sin for us, so we would receive forgiveness and redemption of our sin, when we call upon His Name, repent of our sin. He could have destroyed all creation, because of our rebellious hearts. Remember God is Holy, Just and Righteous, yet He hates our sin, but loved us first. Because of our forefathers sin and iniquity, we are born in sin, thus we entered into death and destruction.
As mentioned in my earlier post: – “Forgiveness#1;” Our Lord did not condemn the woman caught in adultery. The religious leaders of that time, were quick to condemn this woman. In fact, they were ready to stone her, as if they were innocent. According to the Law, she would have to stoned. The Lord then challenged her accusers, with whoever is without sin, to cast the first stone! He stooped down, started writing on the ground.
We are not sure, what He had written. He may have written down every one of their sins. Yet He never condemned them. They left one by one, until just the woman and our Lord, had been alone. Asking; who condemned her. She answering, said nobody. The ideal opportunity, for Him to condemn her, yet He forgave her.
If He readily, forgave, pardoning, her sin and iniquity; how much then, all the more, are we able to forgive others. He also releasing her from sin’s bondage, set her free; from condemnation. It is written in Paul’s letter to the Romans: –
8 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (Rom 8:1-2 KJV).
2.3 Why must we Forgive
Remember God forgave us our sin through Christ Jesus. When we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sin. Jesus became sin for us! He who knew no sin; became sin for us, so we would become the Righteousness of God in Him.
14 Yes, [For] if you forgive others for their ·sins [transgressions; failings; trespasses], your Father in heaven will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive others, your Father in heaven will not forgive your ·sins [transgressions; failings; trespasses].(Mt 6:14-15 Expanded Bible)
14 For if you forgive people their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you.15 But if you do not forgive others their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses. (Mt 6:14-15 Amp)
13 For to him who has shown no mercy the judgment [will be] merciless, but mercy [full of glad confidence] exults victoriously over judgment.(Jas 2:13 Amp).
12 So speak and so act as [people should] who are to be judged under the law of liberty [the moral instruction given by Christ, especially about love].13 For to him who has shown no mercy the judgment [will be] merciless, but mercy [full of glad confidence] exults victoriously over judgment. (Jas 2pv Expanded Bible)
There are certain benefits, associated with the willingness to forgive others. When forgiving those who have treated us ill, we in turn would also receive restoration. Forgiveness works together with God”s Love. Forgiveness always brings healing. Forgiveness delivers us from bitterness.
When we are forgiven, even walking in forgiveness; we are blessed. As it is written; “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.” (Rom 4:7-8)
Forgiveness is activated, through God’s Love, by faith. As James writes saying: –13Is anyone among you afflicted (ill-treated, suffering evil)? He should pray. Is anyone glad at heart? He should sing praise [to God].14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call in the church elders (the spiritual guides). And they should pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Lord’s name.15 And the prayer [that is] of faith will save him who is sick, and the Lord will restore him; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.16 Confess to one another therefore your faults (your slips, your false steps, your offenses, your sins) and pray [also] for one another, that you may be healed and restored [to a spiritual tone of mind and heart]. The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].17 Elijah was a human being with a nature such as we have [with feelings, affections, and a constitution like ours]; and he prayed earnestly for it not to rain, and no rain fell on the earth for three years and six months. [I Kings 17:1.]18 And [then] he prayed again and the heavens supplied rain and the land produced its crops [as usual]. [I Kings 18:42-45.]19[My] brethren, if anyone among you strays from the Truthandfalls into error and another [person] brings him back [to God],20 Let the [latter] one be sure that whoever turns a sinner from his evil course will save [that one’s] soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins [procure the pardon of the many sins committed bythe convert].(Jas 5:13-20 Amp).We need to forgive ourselves also. Often we may have been offended, through different people, leaders. church, religion yes even employers, employees and such things. Offences will come, but let us not hold record of these things. We need to put away all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, evil speaking including malice. Paul writes of this in his letter to the Ephesians: –
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [do not offend or vex or sadden Him], by Whom you were sealed (marked, branded as God’s own, secured) for the day of redemption (of final deliverance through Christ from evil and the consequences of sin).31 Let all bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment (anger, animosity) and quarreling (brawling, clamor, contention) and slander (evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind).32 And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you.(Eph 4:30-31 Amplified).
Forgiveness, Grace and Mercy, is found through out Scripture. God forgives us because of His Great Love. Forgiveness, is not operative without God’s Love. God’s Love surpasses our understanding. So does His Forgiveness. Forgiveness enables us to live. Perfect Love casts away fear.
2 May grace (God’s unmerited favor) and spiritual peace [which means peace with God and harmony, unity, and undisturbedness] be yours from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.3 May blessing (praise, laudation, and eulogy) be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual (given by the Holy Spirit) blessing in the heavenly realm!4 Even as [in His love] He chose us [actually picked us out for Himself as His own] in Christ before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him in love.5 For He foreordained us (destined us, planned in love for us) to be adopted (revealed) as His own children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the purpose of His will [because it pleased Him and was His kind intent]—6 [So that we might be] to the praise and the commendation of His glorious grace (favor and mercy), which He so freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.7 In Him we have redemption (deliverance and salvation) through His blood, the remission (forgiveness) of our offenses (shortcomings and trespasses), in accordance with the riches and the generosity of His gracious favor,8 Which He lavished upon us in every kind of wisdom and understanding (practical insight and prudence),9 Making known to us the mystery (secret) of His will (of His plan, of His purpose). [And it is this:] In accordance with His good pleasure (His merciful intention) which He had previously purposed and set forth in Him,10 [He planned] for the maturity of the times and the climax of the ages to unify all things and head them up and consummate them in Christ, [both] things in heaven and things on the earth.(Eph1:2-10 Amp).to be contd
