Do You Delight Yourself in the Word?
3So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.(Deut 8:3 NKJ)
4But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’(Mt 4:4 NKJ)1 IN THE beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. [Isa. 9:6.]2 He was present originally with God.3 All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being.4 In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men.
5 And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it].6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. [Mal. 3:1.]7 This man came to witness, that he might testify of the Light, that all men might believe in it [adhere to it, trust it, and rely upon it] through him.8 He was not the Light himself, but came that he might bear witness regarding the Light.9 There it was–the true Light [was then] coming into the world [the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light] that illumines every person. [Isa. 49:6.]10 He came into the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him [did not know Him].11 He came to that which belonged to Him [to His own–His domain, creation, things, world], and they who were His own did not receive Him and did not welcome Him.12 But to as many as did receive andwelcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name–[Isa. 56:5.]13 Who owe their birth neither to bloods nor to the will of the flesh [that of physical impulse] nor to the will of man [that of a natural father], but to God. [They are born of God!]14 And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacled (fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile) among us; and we [actually] saw His glory (His honor, His majesty), such glory as an only begotten son receives from his father, full of grace (favor, loving-kindness) and truth. [Isa. 40:5.]15 John testified about Him and cried out, This was He of Whom I said, He Who comes after me has priority over me, for He was before me. [He takes rank above me, for He existed before I did. He has advanced before me, because He is my Chief.]16 For out of His fullness (abundance) we have all received [all had a share and we were all supplied with] one grace after another and spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing and even favor upon favor and gift [heaped] upon gift.17 For while the Law was given through Moses, grace (unearned, undeserved favor and spiritual blessing) and truth came through Jesus Christ. [Exod. 20:1.]18 No man has ever seen God at any time; the only unique Son, or the only begotten God, Who is in the bosom [in the intimate presence] of the Father, He has declared Him [He has revealed Him and brought Him out where He can be seen; He has interpreted Him and He has made Him known]. [Prov. 8:30.]19 And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you?20 He confessed (admitted the truth) and did not try to conceal it, but acknowledged, I am not the Christ!21 They asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not! Are you the Prophet? And he answered, No! [Deut. 18:15, 18; Mal. 4:5.]22 Then they said to him, Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?23 He said, I am the voice of one crying aloud in the wilderness [the voice of one shouting in the desert], Prepare the way of the Lord [level, straighten out, the path of the Lord], as the prophet Isaiah said. [Isa. 40:3.] (Jn 1:1-23 Amp).
The Word Speaks
The Word Speaks
Right in the beginning, before all time, God spoke the creation into being (Gen1;1-25). When Jesus walked upon the earth, He spoke to the storm, saying peace be still and the storm became calm. He said let there be light and there was light. In fact, when reading the Scriptures, often you see the Lord speak something into being. We are reminded the Word has been made flesh, dwelling amongst us. Even today, His words still ring and stand true. His Word abides and remains forever. When we say yes to Jesus, for Him to come into our life, He definitely shall! Over time, He changes us; from the inside, to the outside.
His Word is Truth! Death and life are surely found in the power of our tongue, whether we speak death or life, we shall surely eat the fruit of it (see Pr 18:20-21). We often need to be reminded, about guarding our heart; above all that needs to be guarded, for out of it flow rivers, streams, issues of life (See Pr4:20 – 23). David understood the power of his words. He asked the Lord to put a guard over his lips. A watch over his tongue.
Christ Jesus, said that out of the abundance of our heart, our mouth speaks. James also reminds us to watch that which we are saying. He tells us about good and bad words coming from our mouth. He says our tongue cannot be tamed. Using the illustration of a ship been steered, by its rudder. He pointed out; that we, often determine the outcome of our future events; through the correct or incorrect usage of our tongue. Our tongue is so set in our bodies, in such a way, that it defiles the whole body, setting on fire nature’s course, by and through hell’s fire (see Jas3:1-12).
The trouble is, we bless the Lord, our God and Father with our tongue; yet curse men who have been formed, made in God’s image. With the same mouth we praise God, with blessings, yet we curse others. These things should not be so (Jas3:10-12). Therefore we need to watch our words, test our thoughts, see if they give God, all the Glory!
Watch the Word
14 May the words from my mouth and the thoughts from my heart
be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my defender (Ps 19:14 GW)
63 Life is spiritual. Your physical existence doesn’t contribute to that life. The words that I have spoken to you are spiritual. They are life. (Jn 6:63 GW)
66 Jesus’ speech made many of his disciples go back to the lives they had led before they followed Jesus. 67 So Jesus asked the twelve apostles, “Do you want to leave me too?”68 Simon Peter answered Jesus, “Lord, to what person could we go? Your words give eternal life.69 Besides, we believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”(Jn 6:66-69 GW).
103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.(Ps 119:103-105 Amp).
