Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.(See Jas 5:13-20 NKJ)
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes And he shall turn and reconcile the hearts of the [estranged] fathers to the [ungodly] children, and the hearts of the [rebellious] children to [the piety of] their fathers [a reconciliation produced by repentance of the ungodly], lest I come and smite the land with a curse and a ban of utter destruction. (Mal 4:5-6 Amp).
Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice and the wood and the stones, and also licked up the water that was in the trench. (1Kgs18:13-39 Amp)
After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying . “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain to upon the earth.” So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria. (1Kgs 18:1-3 Amp).
Elijah appears before Ahab
After some time, Elijah; appeared before Ahab. Ahab called Elijah troubler of Israel. Elijah answered; saying that he (Elijah) hadn’t been the one troubling Israel. He boldly declared that it is Ahab and his house, who had been the reason, for Israel’s trouble, for they brought Israel into their forsaking of God. Ahab’s house led Israel into idol worship. Because o f his unrighteous, unholy acts, Israel fell headlong in the way to death and destruction.
Here once again we find, when there is an unrighteous, unholy king, queen, president or leader that came into power over a nation, it would lead to destruction. Actually when we return to Solomon’s reign, and dedication of Israel’s temple, and her peoples.
In 2Chron 6:16-7:14 we find an interesting scripture. Here we see what may take place when sin goes unchecked: –
Some Consequences of Sin
- When we forget our Lord, and carry on sinning, we may face consequences. (See also my posts concerning Jonah & Nineveh).
- The heavens may be shut up, not producing rain
Know the tree by its fruit
- Their sin would bring about judgement
- They may be carried away from their land
- It may also bring forth a famine upon themselves and their land
- Pestilences, plagues could take place
- They and their country may experience besiegements.
- They may be taken away, captive, by their enemies.
- Their sin would bring about death and destruction.
- They could be cursed with a curse because of their sin.
- They would experience condemnation.
They would become enslaved by their enemies, should they have carried on with this evil. Israel had to face these consequences, because of Ahab’s and Jezebel’s ungodliness and wickedness. When we see what is written about sin’s wages, the Holiness of God and His Righteousness. It stands to reason, why the Lord; raised this zealous Tishbite; Elijah, to confront the whole house of Ahab.
At this time Elijah declared, decreed; the drought, which was about to take place, in all of Israel; because of Ahab’s wickedness. Elijah had been fully aware of the consequences, cost of Israel falling from God’s perfect plan for her. Thus he (Elijah) had not been out of sinc, when he confronted Ahab; with the evil, which he brought upon Israel. Through calling the drought into being; Elijah, brought judgement upon Ahab’s house and all Israel.
Elijah at Zarephath
The Lord tells us in Ezekiel; “But if a wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; because of the righteousness which he has done, he shall live. Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord God, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live?” (Ezek 18:121-23 NKJ).
After Elijah declared the coming drought, the Lord sent him to the brook Cherith, where he would be provided for. While still at Cherith Brook, the provision dried up. Remember, there are times when the Lord gives a word, whether for a nation, or her people. Believers are not necessary immune, to the consequences.
Believers are also people, individuals who have feeling, emotions thoughts of their own. It is only by God’s Grace, we’re able to stand, live our life to the fullest. Bad things also happen to believers, not just non-believers only. Difference being, when we undergo difficulties, we know to whom we are able to go to. Our strength then; is in the Lord, our shelter and our strong tower, to whom we’re able to go, in times of trial. He always causes us to triumph. Yet we are often more, sorely, tried than others.
‘Tis here where, although the Brook dried up, the Lord Told Elijah, to arise and go to a certain widow in Zarephath. Whom the Lord prepared to care and provide for him, during the rest of the drought. Interesting to know, Zarephath had been a city of Sidon. The very country from which Jezebel’s father had ruled and reigned, as king of Sidon. Jezebel’s homeland. She brought Baal worship to Israel, which lead Israel astray.
Now the Lord instructed Elijah to go to Zarephath of Tyre and Sidon. When the drought became severe. He would provide someone to care, for His prophet. So then Elijah arose, left Cherith Brook, and went on his way, to Zarephath.
Entering Zarephath, he saw the widow gathering sticks. He asked her to provide him with a drop to drink, and something to eat. She gave a portion of her last, flour, oil, made a little bread thereof, which she gave the Lord’s prophet. What would happen now? Good question indeed. This widow let Elijah know, it was their last meal.
She prepared a portion for her son and self. She had nothing left. What would the man of God do now? The media’s headlines , screamed: –
“News Flash!” “News Flash!” “News Flash!”
“Prophet asks Widow; for her last Portion!”
“Drought spreads through out!”
“It’s recently come to notice, a certain prophet from Tishbe, has declared there will be a drought, throughout the nation. People all over the kingdom, are undergoing famine. The prophet approached the king, the president and the whole cabinet, earlier today. Cabinet, princes, parliament and local leaders, are asking what is the meaning of these things.
When interviewing the prophet on this matter; he said; it is because of the great wickedness which was taking place, in between the present borders. For the people have forsaken their God. The government has allowed, the people to feast, serve whichever entity they wish. Yet they wish the people to preferably, bow to the altar set up by the king himself. ( It’s also been said the king has set up a wooden image of remembrance, in honour to the queen and her father).
This prophet also said, that the drought will be broken, only at his word. When we sought him for an interview, we heard he has been at Cherith Brook. On investigating the matter; we found the brook had dried up. On further investigation, we found he has been seen at a certain widow’s house, in Zarephath of Sidon. We understand the queen, came also from the district of Sidon.
According to trusted sources, the queen’s father, rules from out of Sidon. It has also been recently reported, this Tishbite; has been asking a poor widow, and her only son, to give him a little water to drink. While she went in to fetch some water. Although the widow had collected a few sticks to bake her last portion of bread for herself and her son, he asked for a bite to eat.
This prophet; still had the audacity, calling after her to bring a small portion of bread, for him to eat. Even though the widow told him, it had been their last ration pack. Yet he still insisted that, she bake a small portion of bread, for himself. The widow still told this prophet; if she gives him a piece of bread, they would die.
Despite all these things, the Tishbite adamantly, declared his God, would abundantly provide. He further said; her flour bin and oil jar, would not run dry neither be used up. Apparently these would be in abundance, continue till the day; when his God brings rain upon the earth. When interviewing the widow we, heard that it had come to pass, even as this Tishbite said it would.
We shall follow up this story later on. We understand, there had been further developments. We will investigate, and see what the rest of the people have to say. There had been rumors of the widow’s son been raised from the dead. We also heard that Ahab had been looking for the Tishbite, and presently couldn’t find him. It has been recorded this prophet, had confronted Jezebel’s priests, about some or other summit on Carmel.
It is said he invited Ahab and all the people of Israel to meet for some or other discussion. He is said to have been fairly radical. He spoke about a cloud, not been bigger than a man’s hand, which could bring an abundance of rain. We shall try to follow up, some of these recent reports. We shall also try reviewing some of these stories, in due course.
Presently we trust the Lord for further developments. After all it is written; ev’ry knee shall bow, ev’ry tongue confess, Jesus Christ is Lord. It has been so even during the beginning of time. He has said: –
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the Lord, “thoughts of of peace and not evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jer 29:11 NKJ).
